After reading an online article about Brooklyn Bagel Boys's promise of fresh hand made bagels and a strive to bring the NY taste to Sydney, I made an effort to drive out during my lunch break just to sample the hype.
The shop sits on a main road, hidden subtle away without any big signage. I walked in and most of the staff were at the back doing their thing, which gave me a quick chance to glance over the menu.
I ordered a Lower Eat Syde Sammich - Pastrami reuben with mustard gruyere, 'slaw and a dill pickle on NY deli rye. I actually didn't notice the price but the sandwich was $12. Not a decent serving at that... but its justified as pastrami is an art...and art costs money. The first bite made me fall in love with it... but after more bites, you soon find that the sandwich itself felt slightly drier and saltier than you'd hope. Though overall still quite fantastic. I do miss the Reuben sandwiches served in NY though with the meat layer being the thickest layer...
I also got a plain Everything bagel just to try it on it's own... their bagels have the right bounce and texture... just like the ones I had in Brooklyn. The bagels were nice and thick as well....
With such a nice thick bagel... I was excited to see it smothered with a complimenting thick layer of cream cheese as for me there's no better way of enjoying it. I ordered a bagel with bacon, bourbon and maple cream cheese schmear... only to find out i got such a thin "schmear" of cream cheese... such a waste and disappointment....
I still love this place for it's originality and quality... I guess I just need to try a few times to find out which ones I like most and stick to that... I'd definitely recommend coming here for their bagels... best I've had in Sydney... well at least the closest I've had to a NY bagel experience...
