We decided to stroll the streets of Eastwood hoping to find a new place to dine. We stumbled onto the busy Home Kitchen and since it was booming with diners, we too waited.
WifeOfSnackingBear loves her rice so we ordered a dish of Yangzhou Fried Rice. Yangzhou Fried rice is a very popular wok styled dish cooked with day old rice, diced pork, shrimp, egg, scallions and some vegetables. The oils and aroma brings the rice dish over the line despite it being slightly dry.
We tried their Pan Seared Pork Dumplings. Many customers seem to be having the Pan Seared Pork Buns instead but from my experiences I've never been too much of a fan due to the thick casing. It tends to shadow the meat inside. Unfortunately I felt the same way about their dumplings... the dumpling skin seemed too thick though the fault was slightly masked in the beautiful crunchy base.
I didn't like the lack of sauce on the table to mix your own concoction but instead a premixed version comes out. I couldn't be bothered asking for chilli sauce as well, since the waitresses seem too busy trying to get more people in.
A nice tall glass of Traditional Wintemelon Tea to pair with the meal seems like a good choice. I just wish it was more on the colder side.
From the outside it can be a bit confusing on how the system works. You need to get a number, which is normally given by one waitress, then you have the option to wait in small seating area by the door or outside in small groups (which shall add further chaos to people trying to dodge their hungry diners). No-one really greets you at the door as the place seems very understaffed. A few customers rocked up, looked inside, couldn't understand where to get a number and left... and we nearly did too until I had to go in and initiate a conversation with a staff member.
I noticed that a lot of patrons ordered their Traditional dishes to share with rice instead of our ordering technique. Maybe we made a bad choice there. The experience wasn't as impressive as we'd hope.. stumbling onto a hidden gem tucked away on the quieter side of Eastwood but packed with people in the know... maybe a revisit is in order to tackle the menu differently.
