It's been a long time coming. I've seen all the posts of Spice Alley... I've heard so much about it but due to my lack of time in Sydney nowadays... it was always hard to plan a visit. Finally a free Sunday hits, and off I am to Spice Alley with WifeOfSnackingBear... with empty stomachs, and high hopes.
I was roped in by their "special" Roti Canai and Three Satay Sticks. It came out more of a snack than a meal and despite how pretty it looked... I was left still hungry after $12. Curry was a tad cold, roti was soft and fluffy, chicken was tender and full of flavour but served at room temperature and slightly small. Serving proportions could have been more generous at that price tag. (Dish from Alex Lee Kitchen)
Undoubtedly WifeOfSnackingBear had to attempt their Hainanese Chicken. The chicken rice had intense sensations of garlic which though strong, really made the dish stand out. Paired with a beautiful chilli sauce, smooth fresh chicken and a tiny bowl of soup. It provided heavenly bites to the satisfied WifeOfSnackingBear. (Dish from Alex Lee Kitchen)
Nothing better than a cold cup of Teh Tarik with the meal. A deliciously cold, sweet and refreshing delight to mellow out the burn. (Drink from Nonya Sweets and Dessert)
For a light dessert, we had the Mango Sticky Rice. Sweet, fresh mango paired with slightly chewy, sticky rice. (Dessert from Bang Luck)
They really thought the area out with remote controlled roofing to close up when the weather gets bad.. providing ample of seating despite the weather conditions.
Spice alley has many beautiful artworks on display creating nice little themed areas to dine in.
This dining street creates a nice little nook of "not-so-secret" eating areas that offers decent valued hawker style foods with an ambience to match.
My favourite aspect of Spice Alley is the notion of a cashless society. *cheers* I've always been under the belief that cash is no longer needed... and I'm so glad more new businesses are embracing the ideology. For those still stuck in the past, you have the option to buy cash cards at a pay station.
At the end of Spice Alley, even Reynold from Masterchef has opened up his own restaurant (Koi), which will be certain to draw in a lot of crowds.. especially for his famous desserts.
If you haven't been, I highly recommend it. No longer a best kept secret... but sometimes secrets like this are meant to be shared...
