The Mandalay bus resides at the end of Lonsdale Street and I can guarantee you won't miss their shop layout as it's a yellow double decker bus. This Canberra icon reopened shop late 2014 and has stuck around to cure late night cravings.
So I started off with their Satay Chicken with Kimchi on Roti. Like seriously can it get any more fusion than this. I was intrigued as I've heard their satay chicken was one of their top sellers. The concept had potential. The roti had a nice crunch to it but tasted like the ones I buy at Costco. The satay chicken was a tad on the salty end but can be forgiven when paired with the fresh un-kimchi like salad... which was needed to add not only texture but more flavour. The chicken was at least tender but the taco style snack was definitely a messy contender to woof down. I had many mixed feelings about this... it was creative, the flavours individually were okay but when combined together I'm not sure I was entirely convinced.
What definitely stopped me in my tracks was their Curry Aioli Waffle Fries. If the name itself wasn't convincing enough, let this tray of golden potato treats do the talking. Firstly for the chip lovers this dish is like chips on the next level. Golden cuts of waffle fries dusted with curry powder... then slopped on top with aioli, crumbled papadum and that sweet curry sauce (so damn good!)... it was totally drool-worthy. I manage to smash down a tray myself and I think my heart is still suffering from all the oil I consumed. The dish gets two thumbs up from me and I'm hoping to see it again on the menu when I bring others along to try.
If you're in Braddon and you're after a food truck (or bus in this case) that stands out from the rest, definitely give The Mandalay Bus a chance to open up your taste sensations with their Asian fusion dishes.
