Being a South Westie one of our favourites was to dine at Cooks Hill Hotel. The line would be out the door for a massive steak, chips and salad for $10. There use to be a steak nazi (like the soup nazi on Seinfield) where if you took too long to order he'd basically kick you out...
Now this has spawned a chain of J's Kitchen Steak House's around... I've only ventured to Cabramatta branch to try but the constant hovering of fruit flies was enough to turn me off from any voluntary revisit. It seems the business plan is to find a run down venue, cheap rent and serve cheap food in bulk.... to which the same principle applies to Burwood's Avondale Hotel branch.
After watching a movie at Event's in Burwood, we ventured out onto Burwood Road's booming Asian-dominated eat street and to end up in the most run down non-Asian option was a slight surprise.
I think before trying this place (and the principle is best applied to all branches) is you need to set some realistic expectations... for the serving size and price you can't be expecting magnificent ambience, friendly service and excellent quality. It's the age old debate of quality vs quantity and in this case quantity wins by a mile most of the time.
Things that do go wrong often with this place is you WILL get a lot of sauce on your food... to which I don't mind because I love sauce in general but for those of you who favour not having your steak swimming in a pool of Dianne sauce you have the option to pay an extra $1 and get the sauce on the side. Another thing is your steak will probably not be cooked to your specification. The chef is pumping these out like a mini factory at the back...
Also in the rare case, like this one, I asked for a T-Bone steak and got rump steak... I didn't even bother going back to complain because I know they will do nothing anyways...
Surprisingly decent is their cheesy garlic bread... but at $6 a plate it's not really value for money.
So for a steak experience (they do have other options.. I just always go for their steak) that won't break your bank, and possibly keep you full for two meals, I'm happy to say J's Kitchen Steak House at least delivers that...
