Berala Seafoods

I love the power of Fish and Chips. It's one of those foods that allows me to relive my childhood memories of standing in line at the Fish and Chips shop.. holding my gold coin.. waiting to buy three piping hot potato scallops covered in chicken salt... and the blissful sensation of scoffing them down... slightly burning my mouth but not caring...

I've yet to find a place that just gives me the same feeling. Despite the ratings being quite high for this place I think the food doesn't really match up. The crumbed fish wasn't bad. The fish wasn't dry but just didn't have that buttery melt in your mouth sensation you get from the fish cocktails out at Rhodes Shopping Centre.

An interesting thing on the menu were the battered NZ Mussels. They were tough and still dirty/gritty.

One of the highlights was the battered Pineapple. I never use to love these until I met my wife. The key thing missing from this was the dash of cinnamon between batter and pineapple... It would have really enhanced the flavours more I think...

Another favourite was the potato scallops... the serving of chicken salt was a bit stingy BUT the flavours were as close as I've gotten to something that reminds me of being a kid again...

I also tried a crumb calamari... and there was just nothing special about it...

I think the most disappointing part of the meal were the chips for me... It was dry, there was not enough salt of them... and even when I smothered it in tomato sauce... I still ended up throwing away 60% of the serving...

The service could have been friendlier.. but it was quite efficient with the minimal staff. Most people placed their orders and walked off and came back ten minutes later to collect. The owner seemed friendlier with his regulars.

Though, I loved taking this home... wrapped in two layers of butchers paper... soaked in oil... just like old times... I was still hoping to find an amazing local fish and chip shop close to home... one that wasn't trying to reinvent the wheel or cost me an arm and leg... but at the end of the day this just didn't tick enough boxes for me...

About

I suddenly feel the tides turning. A yearn for something better in my life. I'm hoping for big changes in my career, maybe the touch of my first born and the ongoing rollercoaster of my marriage.

It feels important enough to dedicate a few minutes of my days to etch out how it is through my eyes... just so one day I can flick through and reminisce

Meet The Author

I've spent my whole life being the son my parents wanted me to be. I studied hard, went through the different levels of the school system and then I'm now 30. I married a beautiful girl, trying to pay off a mortgage, and have a bucket list of things I want to do which don't involve work.

I've always had a passion for blogging, photography, food, collecting aka organised hoarding and music and I can't think of any better moment to start documenting it...
