The Basak

Basak sits in the same location selling similar foods to where I would get my Korean hotdogs and fried sushi from. No longer are they on the menu nor is the store the same but they still offer Korean street food.

We started off with their quintessential Spicy Rice Cake Soup. It's like a staple dish at all these Korean street food stalls. It was more soupy than most I've had and the rice cake was very tender. The spice levels did not disappoint.

We sampled the Fried Vegetables and Udon. The udon noodles were a tad soft and the soup had clean flavours which were very safe. There wasn't much to complain about it nor anything to write home about. It's a nice dish to add that warm soup sensation in your stomach.

I enjoyed the fried vegetables. For me anything deep fried just seems to taste better.

We had their Basak Kimbap. It's like a sushi but not. More packed with ingredients and less subtle in flavours. It really brings back memories of always eating the food from our Korean friend's lunchbox. The serving size was generous and the dish for me is always moreish.

We also had their Fried Seaweed with Noodle Roll. In this case, deep fried did not improve it much at all. It was interesting in texture and taste but I guess at the end of the day it's not for me.

All the water, cutlery and sauces are self serve and all decked out on a little setup near the counter. The English level of the staff is poor on average but the menu has pictures which is basically how I tend to successfully order in foreign countries. Generally most orders are for takeaway and there usually isn't a line... especially good when you're hungry. As usual with small asian places, it's cash only.

The layout is cosy which basically equates to small and uncomfortable. If you order more than 3 dishes, the tables aren't built to accomodate.

I really enjoy this style of Korean food, it's simple, quick, homely, cheap and taste great. Ticks all the boxes I could ask for.

About

I suddenly feel the tides turning. A yearn for something better in my life. I'm hoping for big changes in my career, maybe the touch of my first born and the ongoing rollercoaster of my marriage.

It feels important enough to dedicate a few minutes of my days to etch out how it is through my eyes... just so one day I can flick through and reminisce

Meet The Author

I've spent my whole life being the son my parents wanted me to be. I studied hard, went through the different levels of the school system and then I'm now 30. I married a beautiful girl, trying to pay off a mortgage, and have a bucket list of things I want to do which don't involve work.

I've always had a passion for blogging, photography, food, collecting aka organised hoarding and music and I can't think of any better moment to start documenting it...
