It was a Wednesday night and the place was more than half full. I was immediately seated but hated the fact I was hounded several times during my meal about "Only cash accepted". I get it, I mean after you got me to the seat, instead of asking if I need anything you straight out told me "Cash Only."
So I started off with their Pan Fried Shallot Cake. Is it just me or did that pancake shrink in translation? The pancake was crunchy and oily but tasty enough.
What you will notice is that the place does not leave their sauces on the table. Which for me is quite unusual. I had to individually ask for each type of sauce I wanted because a simple request for sauce only gets you one type of their picking. Sure, what a tedious process but at least they were polite and efficient about it.
Next out was their Five Sliced Braised Beef Slices. I can't say I've had this before. It came out cold... in fact some of the sauce was a bit gelatinous. Luckily I'm not easily offended by food. Once my mind got over the fact it wasn't a hot dish, I started to thoroughly enjoy the slight rough slices of beef paired with a sweet, sour and chilli sauce that grew increasingly hotter. It was also nice if you could get a spoonful of salad with each bite. I did appreciate the kick despite reaching for the bottle of water a few times.
Last but not least a mandatory plate of Pan Fried Pork Dumpling. I was a bit taken back by the size of each dumpling... which was quite petite. There was a very pungent pork smell from the dumplings. The dumplings were also very deep fried to the point it was quite crunchy and a bit too oily for my liking.
The decor was clean and minimalistic. I doubt the design was done with a ultra modern chic finish in mind. Judging by the service and attitude you'd have to bring it down to pure laziness in effort and "We just want your money" mentality.
Parking in the area seems consistently horrendous but I enjoyed the walk from the Woolworth carpark as it gave me a chance to browse at all the Asian restaurant options.
If you're after decent dumplings on a budget price then make your way to Dickson Dumpling House.
