From the outside, without being in the know, you would not realise that at the back of Bald Faced Stag, Chicken and Sons have temporarily moved in. Chicken and Son's kitchen had to relocate due to an unexpected fire but on the upside definitely brought them more exposure to the Inner West.
First burger we tackled - 'The Stag' Burger - Double Beef Pattie, double bacon, double cheese, secret sauce, house pickles, onion, tomato, lettuce. Normally I'm not a fan of double patties but these were extremely juicy, the bacon was crispy and that sauce was the icing on the cake.
The large burger size usually causes a problem with balance but this actually had no issues... still fell apart after a few bites but it's hard to prevent a mess in these situations. What I also loved was the burger didn't end up becoming a big pile of mush and you could distinctly taste each layer. After a few bites, Chicken and Sons easily jumped into my top 3 burger joints in Sydney.
Our next hurdle - 'The Mother Clucker' Grilled Chicken Burger - Spiced chicken breast, bacon, jalapeno, lettuce, tomato, tortilla, Chicken & Sons 'Motherclucker' hot sauce. Yet again the crispy bacon and their sauce (it actually had some burn factor and was unbelievably delicious) was clearly the highlight... even enough for me to forgive the slight dryness in the chicken.
We ordered both with a side of Truffled Mac 'n' Cheesy Chips... which sounded better than they tasted. It added no extra wow factor to the meal.
One of the highlights for me was having a chat with the wife of one of the owners. It actually came about due to her admiration of my camera. She came over and we had a nice chat about their humble beginnings, their passion with food and just how great this place is. Something I definitely didn't know is that they came from a fine dining background. I love watching/listening to people talk about their passion... and especially if their passion is food.
Don't be thrown off by the front... Definitely don't judge a book by it's cover... Go in, bask yourself in good friendly service, burgers that tower and those damn delicious sauces.
