I remember noticing it sitting in the cabinet at a surf store in LA. The LED lighting in the cabinet hit that metallic face and it just popped and screamed "buy me". My knowledge for watches or G-Shocks was minimum to none. I really just wanted to find a way to spend the left over U.S bills I had before I went home and regretted not splurging. My instinct was that I must be getting it cheaper than Australia or online because I'm in America... the land of where products like this are sold at bargain prices...
The G-Shock range was born in 1983. Coincidentally so was I, which is one aspect of why I collect it. This product introduced the idea that watches can be worn while doing anything. It's no longer this fragile instrument strapped to your hand where you need to put it away incase you dropped it or scratched it. It's suppose to be able to withstand strong impacts and shaking. It's water resistant and you can go snorkelling with it and take it to the beach without worrying about sand. As the years went on the style caught up to meet the consumers wants and needs and it really boomed from there.
And now they have a fan in me...
This is a GA-201-1A. This piece isn't one that screams out "Hey look at me, I'm wearing a G-Shock". Hardly noticeable if you ask me. The metallic face blends in with its environments. It seems to dim out in darker rooms and only shine in bright sunlight.
I love this line taken from the Casio website. It truly reflects my thoughts.
"Very mechanical and very metal, the gears and dials of these models make each glance of the dial a visual adventure."
It's got a smooth resin band on one side and the other is lined with an X-Pattern (matches with the theme of the dial) to just add that extra detail even though it's on the inside of the band. The band sits very comfortably on the wrist. To finish it off it has a silver buckle to contrast.
I'm a full fledged fan and this watch kicked it all off... Can't wait to take the collection out to play...
