Being a stoner/Maccas dinner they didn't play down anything. We were greeted at the top of the stairs by a poster of Ronald smoking chronic with random smoke coming out intermittently and in the background was the oh-so-popular Afroman singing 'Coz I Was High'.
The service was on the ball and we were taken to our tables immediately despite being 20 minutes early. They even created a McDrinks menu to compliment the food journey we were about to embark.
Here's a quick shot of what all the McDonalds character range would look like stoned... and also it doubled as the menu for the night.
I started off the night with the chocolate shake. The drink was 60% ice and 40% what I ordered. My wife got the caramel shake. Her's was the better option. The edging of the cup was lined with sweet caramel and crumbled biscuits. Mine had a few Smarties thrown in which melted along with the ice over time... turning it into rainbow coloured ice.
Our first dish in the set menu was the tempura battered pickles. that's not what they called it but that's what it looked like. The batter was lightly salted. It had a cheese fondue that had a bit of a kick. I love pickles so this was a great start to the night.
We then got our smoked nuggets with 4 sauces - BBQ, Sweet Chilli, Curry and Habernero Mango. Obviously the habernero and mango sauce was my favourite. It was quite hot but so addictive.
We then got served out mini Big Mac topped with an American flag. I added the essential smearing of habernero sauce to make this burger pop and crackle in my mouth.
We then got a McRib with sweet potato fries. The fries tasted like it was from the freezer at Coles and definitely not freshly made... which is not a bad thing anyways. The meat was really tender and succulent but by this point I was completely stuffed because the burger really pushed me over the edge.
The salad, consisting of watermelon, sunflower seeds and chilli, came in a plastic cup. I took a quick bite and gave the rest to the wife... I'm not a fan of watermelon...
To pass the time between dishes, they set up the table with colouring in sheets, textas and crayons. I was so surprised to see every table, consisting of all adults, sitting there colouring this thing in.
By this point in the night, I was already completely stuffed so my reviews might be biased because of how full I was. The deep fried pie came out... the pastry on it was fantastic, like that of a high end meat pie. The hot guava itself was so-so... the sauce added a cooling dimension to the dish but I wish it had more sweetness.
Last but not least... the last dish of the night draws on the memory of our childhoods were we use to dunk our fries in to the chocolate sundae.... I found it rather blah as well. Full marks for creativity though... but as for taste I would much preferred a fancy hot sundae.
I would definitely give this joint another go next year on their annual event. Was the meal worth $112... probably not but it's quite a unique night out.
